Facebook co-founder's husband running for US Congress

Husband of Facebook co-founder, Sean Eldridge has announced he is running for the US Congress next year.

The 27-year-old Democrat posted a message on Twitter late on Sunday saying he will run for a seat in New York's 19th congressional district.

"Right now the voices of everyday New Yorkers are being drowned out by the special interests and party politics, causing gridlock in Washington," Eldridge said in a YouTube video announcing his campaign.

"We need an independent voice who will fight for us, and that's why I'm running for Congress."

Eldridge is founder of an investment company in New York's Hudson Valley, but he was also a gay rights activist, serving as political director for Freedom to Marry as it pushed successfully for legalized marriage equality in New York.

Hughes was a roommate of Mark Zuckerberg during their days at Harvard University, where they launched the social media giant Facebook.

In 2008, technology star Hughes served as director of Barack Obama's hugely successful online presidential campaign effort, seen as a critical element of his successful White House bid.

One year ago Eldridge married Hughes, who became editor-in-chief and publisher of New Republic after buying the magazine in 2012.

The wedding was a star-studded affair, with the House of Representatives Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi in attendance.

Should he win the Democratic primary, Eldridge would likely face two-term Republican incumbent Chris Gibson next year.

Eldridge's said his priorities included protecting entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare health coverage for the elderly, balancing the nation's budget, fighting for women's rights and supporting small businesses and family farms.
 

Orezi Not Signed To Davido's HKN Music Label!

As against reports of Orezi signing a contract with Davido's record label, HKN music, It has been revealed that the story is untrue.

However, it is understood that they had a verbal agreement in the year.

In May 2013, Davido revealed Orezi as the newly signed act to his HKN Gang record label. This was shortly after he and Orezi had hinted fans on social media Twitter on a possible signing.

Orezi tweeted; ''About to make a big career decision !! Change is the only constant thing in lyf .. Lord see me tru.''

Davido was quite excited to announce the signing too. ''I just signed my new artiste but you guys may know him...Orezi, welcome to the team homeboy'', he announced back in May.

But sources close to Orezi have confirmed to us that there were never any concrete talks on the signing which ultimately yielded into talks going in limbo.

As learnt from NET, Orezi, who quit his working relationship with former label Cullbeed Music is currently signed to Sprisal Records being backed by one of the sons of late Oil and Petroleum mogul at FATGBEMS Petroleum, Alhaji Fatai Gbemisola.

Just like Cullbeed Music boss Kolade 'Ronkay' Ajayi's heavy spending, Orezi will be receiving massive financial support once again. Orezi who completed his University education last year and participated in the National Youth Corp Service this year is currently in South Africa doing some club rounds and is expected to return to Nigeria any moment from now.

''Orezi was never signed to HKN, it was just verbal, an understanding. He is signed to Sprisal Records'', Orezi's current manager Ayodeji told NET over the phone.

Sprisal has already gone on to shoot a high budget video for Orezi's new single 'Rihanna' and are working on his long awaited debut album.

Onyeka Onwenu Gets Political Appointment!

Nigerian veteran musician and judge of just concluded Glo X-Factor, Onyeka Onwenu has been appointed as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development (NCWD) in Abuja.

 Onwenu's appointment was made official in a letter signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Ayim Pius Ayim.

A 22-year-old patient, identified only as Xiaolian, had his nose damaged permanently from an infection he suffered following a car accident. However, doctors got him another nose...on his forehead.

 His doctors decided the only way to reconstruct his nose was to surgically form a new one on his forehead, where it will match the tissue of his face.
 Tissue expanders were placed under the skin and then cut to resemble a nose. According to news reports, doctors expect to implant the new nose soon. Forehead skin is used to help reform noses because it is the closest match to skin on the nose.
 However, usually the nose is reformed during surgery. Dr. Patrick Byrne, the director of Facial, Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, said this was likely an extreme case.

Tragic! LagBus Crushes Soldier To Death

Tragedy struck on Monday on the Funsho Williams Avenue bypass, Surulere, Lagos State, after a yet-to-be identified soldier was crushed to death by a LAGBUS, one of the buses in the state mass transit scheme.

 Commuters plying the bridge could not help but watch in horror as the mangled body of the soldier was cut into two by the bus.

Eyewitnesses said the victim, who was riding a motorcycle, was also carrying a woman on the back seat. The passenger was reportedly flung away by the impact of the collision.

 She was said to be in a critical condition and had been taken to an unknown hospital in the state. It was further learnt that the bus driver, after seeing the extent of the damage, removed his uniform and fled the scene. The vehicle passengers also took to their heels to avoid reprisals by soldiers.
A mechanic, Taiwo Akindele, said the accident was caused by the bad state of the bridge. He said, “The accident happened around 7.30am. It involved a red LAGBUS with number ‘30’ written on the body. It did not have a number plate.

According to reports, Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi this afternoon dissolved the executive council of the state. This came as a surprise as it was the least expected move from the governor. Affected in this impromptu decision were the commissioners, advisers and assistants.

Disclosing this in a statement, the Director, Cabinet, Mr. Dotun Omokemi stated that the decision was made after the weekly executive council meeting held today.

Governor Ajimobi was quoted to have said that the development was aimed at injecting fresh blood into the administration in the quest to serve the state better.

The governor thanked the commissioners and Special Advisers who made up the executive council for their contributions so far and asked them to immediately hand over to the Permanent Secretaries in their respective ministries.

P.M.NEWS however learnt that there is a possibility of returning some of the aides whose the governor still found useful to him.

25-year-old Model and Video Vixen Wins Miss Earth 2013

 

25-year-old model and video vixen, Marie Miller was crowned the overall winner of the 2013 Miss Earth Beauty pageant yesterday at the Oriental Hotel, Lekki, Lagos.

The new queen was crowned during the show's finale while the third and second runners-up, Amarachi Uwakwe and Damilola Akinsanya, also won an award for Miss Amity, while the first runner-up, Bibowei Kiri Tessy, won the prize for Best Swim Suit.

Judges for the beauty contest included American model and socialite, Amber Rose, American actor, Boris Kodjoe, and actress, Karlie Redd. Others were Nollywood star, Ini Edo, and photographer Kelechi Amadi-Obi.

The event was co-hosted by actor Joseph Benjamin and Tolu Adeniru

The event had sterling performances from Nigeria's finest entertainers, Dbanj and Timi Dakolo, as well as comedy from Julius Agwu and Funny Bone.

Present at the event were notable players from the Nigerian entertainment industry- the national director for Nigeria to the Miss Earth and president of the Actors' Guild of Nigeria, Ibinabo Fiberesima, actors Ejike Asiegbu, Fred Amata, and Segun Arinze.

Others are President of the Association of Movie Producers, Nigeria, Zik Zulu Okafor, producers Lancelot Imasuen, Charles Novia, Fidelis Duker, Gbenga Adeyinka, amongst others.

Apart from her crown, the new queen walks home with a brand new 2013 Toyota Avensis in addition to a N3m one year salary. She will also represent Nigeria at the Miss Earth pageant (World) scheduled to hold later on this year.

Miller represented Nigeria in the 2011 edition of Miss Model beauty pageant held in Instabul, Turkey.

Koffi Awoonor Is Dead....killed in Kenya Attack

The literary world also got affected from Saturday’s ghastly and cowardly attack carried out by the Somali militant group – Al Shabaab, at the Westgate Mall, in Kenya.

 Ghanaian poet of distinction, and one of Africa’s greatest literary icons, Professor Kofi Awoonor.

 

He died on Sunday morning from wounds sustained during the attack carried out by the Somali militant group.

Beyonce and Jay Z have been named the highest-earning celebrity couple by Forbes.

The pair are reported to have taken home an estimated $95 million (£59 million) in the last year.
Jay Z's recent Watch the Throne album went platinum and launched a world tour that brought in $1.4m (£900,000) per night in America, according to Forbes.

Beyonce's Mrs Carter world tour is estimated to have taken in an average of $2m (£1.3m) per night.

In addition to his music career, Jay Z also part-owns the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, which he will be selling now he has started his own sports agency, Roc Nation Sports.

Sudanese Woman To Be Flogged For Uncovering Hair.

On Thursday, A Sudanese woman who refuses to cover her hair under the country's morality law appeared in court and her case was adjourned until 4 November.

Amira Osman Hamed has said she is prepared to be flogged to defend the right to leave her hair uncovered in defiance of what she has called a "Taliban"-like law.

"The defence asked the court that the charges against this woman be withdrawn, and the court adjourned the hearing until October 4 while it considers the request," Moezz Hadhra told AFP.

In 2009, the case of journalist Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein led to a global outcry and spotlighted women's rights in Sudan.

Hussein was fined for wearing slacks in public but she refused to pay. She spent one day behind bars before the Sudanese Journalists' Union paid the fine on her behalf.

Ten other women rounded up with her in a restaurant were each given 10 lashes.

Justin Timberlake has spoken out in support of Miley Cyrus, insisting while he may not agree with her raunchy image, he still admires her musical talent.

The 'Mirrors' hitmaker has defended the 20-year-old singer from critics - who have objected to her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards and her 'Wrecking Ball' video in which she appears nude - but admitted while he admires her as an artist, he isn't entirely convinced by her image.

He told Matt Lauer on 'Today': ''I don't know that I have a definitive thought in one direction or the other about it. I think she's really smart, and I think she's really talented.

''I'm not saying I agree with the presentation, but I also feel like every 10 to 15 years we pick somebody that this is what we're going to do with them, is we're going to make them the model of who we want our daughters to be or not be.''

Justin has spoken in the past about Miley's duet with 'Blurred Lines' singer Robin Thicke and insisted it was fine given the context of the event.

Idris Elba blasts Liam Gallagher

 

Hollywoodactor Idris Elba has blasted Liam Gallagher for overreacting after he ruffled the Beady Eye star's hair when the pair met earlier this year.

Idris Elba has blasted Liam Gallagher's rock star attitude.

The 'Pacific Rim' actor had a run-in with the Beady Eye star after a meeting at a local bar when he rubbed the singer's hair.

He told GQ magazine: ''[He] didn't like that. Don't touch his hair, apparently. F**k off. Next time walk with a f***ing hairdresser, then.

Liam has also spoken about their argument in the past, claiming he knocked off Idris' hat for messing up his hair.

Ogun Governor Sacks MAPOLY Rector

The Ogun State Government has sacked the Rector of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Mr. Tokunbo Fowode, and announced the appointment of Prof. Bandele Itiola as his successor.

The state government has also frozen the accounts of the polytechnic in various banks.

Fowode, who was in the twilight of his tenure, our correspondent gathered, had been asked by the state government to proceed on terminal leave preparatory to his disengagement from the service of the institution.

MAPOLY, which produced Governor Ibikunle Amosun, has been without a governing council in the past three years.

Fowode, in a telephone interview commended the state government for allowing him to serve MAPOLY as the rector.

According to him, his tenure, "exponentially improved human capacity and physical infrastructure in the annals of the institution."

However, a four-paragraph letter by the Accountant-General of the state, A. S Senfuye, conveyed the decision of the state government to freeze MAPOLY's bank accounts.

The memo freezing the accounts, addressed to the banks and dated September 17, said that the order involved "all manner of accounts-current, deposit and savings."

The state government however stated that payments could be made into the accounts but no withdrawal should be made unless by the directive and clearance from  the state's Accountant-General.

Girl Gets 6hrs Jail Term For Killing Father.

A Ugandan court has given a symbolic six-hour jail term to a teenage girl who killed her rapist father in a case that has drawn a wave of public sympathy.

The 18-year-old girl, who is now pregnant after repeated attacks, had confessed to killing her father with a knife and machete, Peter Mugisha, a prosecutor in the case, told AFP on Friday.

"Because she pleaded guilty and said she acted in self-defence, the judge sentenced her to six hours in jail and by close of the business day she was out of jail," he said.

According to the state-owned New Vision newspaper, the girl had "lost count" of the number of times her 58-year-old father had attacked her since she turned 13. She also said that pleas for help to her mother and local police were ignored.

"To add insult to an injury, she said the deceased had vowed to father more children with her as he had done with her two elder sisters," the paper said. "In total the deceased fathered five children with his daughters."

The case, which was heard earlier this week in a court in Masaka, central Uganda, has captured national attention and prompted a wave of expressions of support for the girl.

Ugandan MP and prominent lawyer Crispus Ayena Odongo said the case was an important landmark in efforts to protect women from sexual violence.

"The court did a good thing. This is the first of its kind and the case is going to make a precedent," he said, adding that he believed the state would not appeal the court's decision because of the public sentiment supporting the girl.

Renowned Ugandan women's rights activist and former minister in charge of ethics, Miria Matembe, nevertheless asserted that the girl should not have been jailed at all.

"This case marks a dark moment in our history," she said, calling for rapists to be castrated.

"Had we started castrating them then such cases would have stopped by now. There is need for experts to help this girl and her siblings come out of this trauma, otherwise they will remain traumatised for the rest of their lives."

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, a conservative Christian, has previously spoken out in favour of imposing the death penalty for rape and incest.

"I don't support the idea of mutilation for men who commit incest or defilement. I think hanging them is much better," he was quoted as saying in a speech marking International Women's Day last year.

A large part of the video was shot at the Victoria Crown Plaza Hotel, Victoria Island and for the first time featured as cameos a number of the year's supporting acts including Seyi Shay, Vector and Sean Tizzle.

Bizarre: Bird Arrested For Spying!

An Egyptian man performed a citizen‘s arrest on the bird suspected to be a spy. The Standard Digital reports the suspected 'winged infiltrator' was taken to the police station in Qena, after being captured. The man grew paranoid when he spotted a small metal device attached to the bird, and felt it was his duty to detain it. After inspection, the device turned out to be a wildlife tracking device, writes The Guardian. Egypt has been plagued with violence and threats, along with the increasing fears of foreign spies and forces, which lead to the suspicions. This is not the first time a bird was suspected of being a spy. The Standard Digital reports a kestrel was detained in Turkey in July, after it was suspected of being an Israeli spy.

Rukus had earlier bashed Ice Prince on his new freestyle 'The list' questioning his lyrical ability.

Narrow Escape As Scores Of People Escaped Death in Lagos State

Scores of people escaped death in Lagos State when a LAGBUS with number plate, XU 998 AAA, rammed into four stationary vehicles.

The incident was said to have occurred under the Carter Bridge at the Ebute-Ero area.

The LAGBUS was said to have been headed for Leventis, Lagos Island.

 Eyewitnesses told our correspondent on Thursday that the bus, which was filled to capacity with some passengers standing, was on top speed before suddenly skidding off the road due to brake failure. A bystander, identified as Francis, was allegedly hit in the process.

It was said that the impact threw Francis under one of the cars parked by the road. The driver of the LAGBUS eventually crashed into four stationary vehicles as he struggled to control the vehicle.

A bystander who identified himself as Momoh said, “We were standing by our car at the Carter Bridge when a LAGBUS lost control and skidded off the road.

“The driver tried to control the bus but it rammed into the pavement and hit a man who was walking along the road at the time. It seemed the man was walking towards his car that he had parked under the bridge.”

 The Lagos State governor has barred big commercial buses, popularly called Molue, from operating on Lagos Island.
 The government explained that it also did not expect the buses to ply Third Mainland, Eko and Carter bridges, adding that operating in the Central Business District had become history for the buses.
 A statement from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority on Thursday said the move was to ensure adequate monitoring of the operations of commercial vehicles and compliance with traffic rules and regulations.
The statement said the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Babatunde Edu, stated this during a stakeholders’ meeting with branch chairmen of the Lagos Urban Bus Owners Association of Nigeria, the operators of Molue buses in the state .

Police Arrests Man Who Rapes Eight Year Old Girl To Death!!!

The police in Bayelsa have arrested an aide to a community leader in Bayelsa for raping an 18-year-old girl to death. The 36-year-old aide to the former Otuoke Community Development Committee (CDC) of Ogbia local government area of Bayelsa State was arrested on Thursday by the police for the rape to death the teenager. Although the autopsy report is yet to be released, the rapist was arrested while trying to dispose off the corpse in the early hours of Thursday. The suspect, according to indigenes of the community, resides in an uncompleted building owned by his boss, a former community development committee chairman. The spokesman of the Bayelsa Police Command, Mr.Alex Akhigbe confirmed the incident and said investigation was ongoing.

Housewife Commits Suicide In Ijebu Ode

Tragedy struck a family in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun
State, yesterday, when a 25-year-old
housewife, Sakirat Abdullahi, allegedly
committed suicide. Sakirat, a mother of a five-
year-old boy, lived at 33, Ereko Street.
She was said to have drunk a mixture of shaving
powder belonging to her husband which she put in a
pap meant for dinner, late Sunday evening.
The widower, Abdullahi, a driver and a member of the
National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW),
Epe Motor Park, was not at home at the time of the
incident.
According to him, he left Sakirat at home, hale and
hearty before she fell into coma after drinking the
poison.
Her husband, who was in terrible shock yesterday
when he spoke to Daily Sun, managed to say: "I met
her early this morning (yesterday) dead in our room.
I forced the door opened because she didn't open
when I knocked,'' he said.
A relation of the couple who identified himself as
Isiaka, amid tears, wondered why her neighbours at
the other building did not come to her aid when she
was groaning in pains even when the window of her
room was open for anyone to hear her cries.
Sakirat's friend, who spoke on the condition of
anonymity, said the deceased vomited in a bucket
until she became unconscious.
Another family friend, Tunde, who claimed to be very
close to the couple, said there was no quarrel or
misunderstanding between them, noting that it is
only God that can really explain the mystery
surrounding the woman's death.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD), Ijebu-Ode General
Hospital, Dr. Wellington Ogunsanya, said
consumption of shaving powder could not result into
instant death as in the case of the deceased.
According to him, it will take three or more days in
some cases, before such development, if not treated,
could result into death.
Dr. Ogunsanya said that there might have been other
factors that resulted into the death.
